Significant Outflows from US Bitcoin ETFs Driven by BlackRock IBIT Fund

On October 7, US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds experienced net outflows totaling $484.9 million, based on data provided by Farside Investors. Leading the wave of withdrawals was BlackRock’s IBIT fund, which saw net redemptions amounting to $207.7 million. This shift represented a stark and sudden reversal from the preceding trading session, during which the group of funds had actually recorded net inflows.

The selling pressure was not confined to a single legacy product, but instead manifested as a broad-based exit across multiple major issuers simultaneously. Fidelity’s FBTC fund was hit hard, recording $105.1 million in net outflows, while ARK ’s ARKB fund saw a loss of $101.7 million. Together, these three specific funds—IBIT, FBTC, and ARKB—accounted for the vast majority of the total daily withdrawal volume.

Other issuers also witnessed capital exiting their respective products during the same window. The BITB fund from Bitwise posted outflows of $27.6 million, and Grayscale’s GBTC fund saw $39.3 million leave the fund. Additionally, the HODL fund managed by VanEck shed $3.5 million. When combined, the figures from these various issuers resulted in the aggregate $484.9 million total for the day.

This particular pattern of movement differs from previous historical periods in the market. In the past, GBTC had served as the primary source of negative flow for the entire sector, largely because investors were exiting that higher-fee legacy trust after it converted into an ETF structure. However, on October 7, the most significant withdrawals originated from products operated by BlackRock, Fidelity, and ARK—funds that have historically been known for attracting substantial amounts of new capital.

The sheer scale of this reversal becomes evident when the data is compared directly to the previous trading day. On October 6, the group had recorded net inflows of $118.8 million. BlackRock’s IBIT had been the primary engine behind that positive movement, taking in $122 million, only to pivot and become the single largest source of redemptions the very next day.

Such rapid fluctuations in the direction of flow are not uncommon within the broader ETF market. Large-scale creations and redemptions do not always signal a permanent change in the institutional view regarding the underlying asset. Instead, these funds are frequently utilized for tactical trades, the rebalancing of portfolios, arbitrage strategies,
